Waseda Jitsugyo clinches Koshien title
Yuki Saito worked tirelessly on the mound yet again

to lead Tokyo's Waseda Jitsugyo to its first National High School Baseball Championship title after a 4-3 victory over Komadai Tomakomai from Hokkaido on Monday.

It was a glorious victory

after a rematch.

Sunday games went into 15th innings,

but the score remained 1-1.

Sure was ecstatic, for the first time

in so many years

of watching Junior Baseball every summer I have spent here.

and I feel his jubilation in the Great Beyond....

He sure must be proud!

I also feel the happiness of every Waseda

the Yasukuni shrine visits of now Japanese PM Koizumi.

THAT, I believe is an INTERNAL AFFAIR of Japan, and as such,

no other country except its own MUST interfere.

for explanations and justifications for those sweeping statement.

OK, Japan has committed atrocities in the past becoz of the war.

The Japanese nation has made numerous apologies for these,

and reparations have been committted, allotted and paid for their past mistakes.

Allow me to remind you that “WARS MAKE BEASTS OF MEN.”

This was the remark made by a Honda executive I once met in Hamamatsu.

He was eventually transfered to head their Manila office a few years back.

Indeed!

This is true in Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, and Lebanon, and elsewhere.

The once great splendor of old Persia was wiped out by continuous bombings

and has now became a jungle of ruins.

There were many killed by the germans in hitler’s camps, and the gulags in Russia.

These were recounteed in numerous books and

was even made into a movie.

The americans massacred Filipinos as well in some parts of our history.

These americans dropped bombs

without any knowledge of its effects on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

I invite you to please research, better still go to Hiroshima,

even Nagasaki, or both

to FEEL the effect of radiation EVEN NOW on its populace

BEFORE YOU MOUTH anything untoward

and make sweeping statements over this issue.

The once peaceful community of innocent civilians were

killed at an instant by a fat bomb dropped at the 2 Japanese cities.

Carpet-bombings of Tokyo flattened the entire metropolis

in a few days.

The ship that carried civilians off Okinawa were sunk.

Need I add more?

While there were news and accounts of atrocities in the Philippines during the war,

we can only surmise as to WHO really did those.

Please be reminded that there were thousands of Korean and Taiwanese conscripts

during the war. While it is a command responsibility of Japan

to answer for the atrocities committed by its people/men., we cannot outrightly say

that they were limited to the Japanese military ONLY.

“feel” the pulse of the people.

I now LIVE IN JAPAN becoz I am a second-generation Japanese.

My father served as a Naval Captain of the Japanese Imperial Navy in the last war

and he was a very gentle soul.

Pinoy neighbors loved him for his natural kindness

and concern for the community where he spent his last days:

in the province where my Nanay was born.

He could have stayed here in his country

but he chose to die and be buried there with my Nanay.

from the USA resumed last week,

but survey showed that

80% wary of eating U.S. beef.

Eighty percent of respondents in a Yomiuri Shimbun survey said they were concerned,

either greatly or to some extent, about the safety of U.S. beef, whose imports resumed recently.
The survey, conducted last Saturday and Sunday through face-to-face interviews,

also found that respondents who said they had no concerns about

the safety accounted for only 19 percent.

Asked whether they want to eat U.S. beef,

nearly 90 percent of respondents had negative views,

with 45 percent of the respondents saying they did not want to eat it,

and 43 percent saying they would like to decide after more consideration.

Only 10 percent of the respondents said they wanted to eat U.S. beef.

The survey was conducted on 3,000 eligible voters selected at random at 250 locations nationwide, of whom 1,741 people, or 58 percent, gave valid responses.

U.S. beef already gone on sale at some large retailers,

with sales expected to expand.

But the survey found that many consumers were concerned

about the safety of the product and reluctant to purchase it.

That includes Jiji.

He prefers to eat Japan-bred beef ONLY!

The figure is higher than the 37 percent who said they supported the government decision.

But, even among those who supported the government's decision,

60 percent of the respondents said that they had concerns over the safety of the beef.

On whether restaurants and other businesses must indicate

the country of origin of beef used in processed food products and on menus

so that consumers could be informed of the use of U.S. beef,

92 percent of the respondents said it should be mandatory,

an indication that consumers are wary they might eat U.S. beef

without knowing it.

CHANGING LICENSE

I have been quite busy today.

I woke up early

[actually, walang tulog....sa kaba!]

and prepared to go to the Licensing Center nearest my

JIKKA [family ancestral home].

With everything prepared: papers, Philippine Driver's License,

ID pix and documents to prove that I have been driving in Inang Bayan

since I can remember, I set off to conquer the tests.

As expected, I arrived early,

but looking at the parking space in front of the Licensing Center,

I may be the 15th or so in the line....

After paying for the test,

and assessment of my papers,

I waited for my name to be called.

Then I had this interview:

in Nippongo by an elderly Policeman

in this region.

He asked details of the way I got my student permit,

to the time I got my Non-Pro License.

He veered into details, mind you.

He asked what car type,

how long I had the actual driving test;

how long the written test was,

what was the passing % percentage,

and how much I paid.

He even delved into what type of test I took.

Blah-blah-blah!

Sa atin naman, alam naman ninyo ang kalakaran, db?

Di hamak na napakadali!

So ayon, Q=A lahat....

At last, it went off nice and I was asked to wait

[again!]

Later, a visual test was conducted.

That includes colors to determine color blindness, I guess.

This put me off a little, becoz my right eyes do not come

20/20. I really have problem with this.

But all went well, I guess.

The officer led us to the driving course.

He showed us the route to be taken,

and showed these via maps around the waiting lounge.

Since it was already 12 NN, he asked us to be back at 1300HRS

for the actual driving test!

Wow!

I was feeling queasy

and cannot eat.

So what I did was walk my way through the course.

I followed the path as I remembered

from the Police Officer's instruction.

Later at exactly 1300 hrs.,

3 white cars came by and stopped at Stop #4,5 and 6.

I was called to go to #5.

That terror Nakamura-san was my examiner!

Shhhhkkkkk!

And I was the first!

Geez!

I did what I was taught by friends and my Jiji.

Being a Pro-Driver here, he teaches me now and then.

First, I checked the car, back and front:

then looked at the back, before I entered the car.

I sat and adjusted the seat,

the rear-view mirror, and the side mirrors.

SINADYAng iniba, para malaman kung talagang matino kang magmaneho.

Yung tamang paraan ba...

Et cetera....

I didn't have problems with the S curve and the L- cut

hairpin curves. I passed them with flying colors, I believe.

Walang comment, eh.

So ganun lang.....

I drove for several minutes...

UNTIL that happened!

Maybe becoz I was under pressure,

I was a bit late stepping on the Brake pedal

and bring the car to a total stop

at one corner.

The police-examiner Nakamura-san howled at me!

ONE corner lang.....

Kung pwede lang magmura at sumigaw rin,

ginawa ko na.

Pero dahil sa ako ang examinee,

siyempre....

IF I make it in two or three takes,

DESPERATELY THIRSTY

Today marks the 61st year

since the second A-bomb was dropped in Nagasaki:

August 9, 1945. 11:02 a.m.

Bockscar, the B-29 bomber carrying a plutonium-core atomic bomb

and commanded by 25-year- old Major Charles Sweeney,

dropped its deadly cargo over Nagasaki from a height of 9,600 meters.

Like the primary target Kokura in Kita-Kyushu,

Nagasaki was overcast that morning.

With barely enough fuel remaining to reach Okinawa,

Major Sweeney and his crew had to pinpoint their target

in the course of only one run

over the city.

By chance a crack opened in the clouds,

revealing the industrial zone stretching from the Mitsubishi sports field

in Hamaguchi-machi to the Mitsubishi Steel Works in Mori-machi

and automatically designated this as the bombing target.

The actual explosion, however, occurred some five or six hundred meters

to the north over a tennis court in Matsuyama-machi.

The rest is history, repeated twice

over the Land of the Rising Sun.

The first in Hiroshima,

and now, Nagasaki,

where thousands of Catholics live and work.

In an instant the entire tow-kilometer radius

from the hypocenter was reduced to ashes, literally.

In a second all those who were in the vicinity of the hypocenter died,

as flashes of heat melted everything, including the glass that was

found melted and fused with the bones of the hand

of an anonymous victim that held them.

The radiation released by the explosion of the atomic bomb

penetrated human bodies

and destroyed cells in various tissues.

The extent of injuries depends on the radiation dose,

but the vast majority of all people

within a distance of one kilometer from the hypocenter died.

Since this includes people without external injuries,

it shows the destructive capacity of radiation.

The damages caused by the atomic bomb

did not end at the moment of the explosion.

The radiation wreaked deep internal injuries

AN OLD BOY with a TOY!

Last week, I went to the hillside town
to buy some corns.
Unfortunately, no corns were available.
It seems that the yield this year is way beyond par.

From afar, I saw something moving....
I stopped becoz I wanted a clear view of that moving thing.

There was this toy-helicopter, much much smaller than
the regular heli,
but bigger than a kid's toy.
Its size can seat a kid or two.

I thought someone was just playing with his toy,
but when I stopped the car, I saw a man in his forties
busy pushing a gadget.

It was a remote gadget that controls the heli.
And the heli was spraying insecticide on the rice field!

Attached to the heli are two orange-colored plastic containers.
I believe this contained the fluid insecticide.

Another Hiroshima?

Around this time last year, I wrote about Hiroshima.....

Another year has passed, and here is August 6 again.

Another hot summer day.

And people who adhere to PEACE will be gathering

at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park for the ceremony.

I cry....

I cry each time I remember Hiroshima.

I have never been to Nagasaki, but surely, one day I will.

I vow to visit and pay homage to one of the cities

devastated by the American forces

in the last WW.

As people here remember,

let us not forget that we are again on the verge of another war.

Iraq has suffered immensely.

Likewise, there's Afghanistan.

And now,

Lebanon's Hezbollah militia with

Israel.

BAD Habits-vs.-GOOD Manners

Bad habits are termed as one that is offensive to another;

a habit that does not conform with the normal norm or standard accepted in polite society.

While Good Manners are socially-accepted norms in any civilized society.

There are many individuals with bad habits we see around

as compared to well-mannered ones.

Some may be too offensive to write but nevertheless,

makes the doer repugnant to watch, hear or see.

Bad habits range from the simple to the most complex, depending on the one who watch.

I guess most of them have never been properly trained by their parents

or the proper agencies, like the school, the church or whatever association they belong to.

~

A child, they say must be trained at an early age.

The Bible says it all:

"Train a child in the way you want them to bes so that when they grow old,

they will not depart from it."

Anything learned by a child at this age[0-6/7y/o],

when their minds and hearts are most malleable,have long-lasting effect,

psycholigists claim.

I agree with this concept.

Child-rearing starts the day when as child begins to

follow simple directions from his/her parents.

This is reinforced every day since then.

The idea is for the child to be ready when

the parents release him to the outside world:

that is when the child begins to associate with others in school[7y/o].

By this time, his/her manners have basic foundation.

Growing up with great manners is a big plus to a person.

It prepares him/her to be a better and productive citizen of his country and the world.

Lately, we see a lot of people whose

manners show whenever they speak, write, or

by simply watching them from a distance.
